Position:   Police Chief

Granville Ohio is located in Licking County, approximately 30 miles east of downtown Columbus, Ohio. Granville was chosen by Ohio Magazine as a "Best Hometown" in 2009.   Granville is a historic community, settled in 1805, and hosts Denison University, a nationally renowned private liberal arts university. 3500 residents call Granville home with an additional 2200 Denison students nine months of the year. Neighborhood preservation is a priority to maintain appreciating home values. The Granville Exempted Village School District is the highest academic rated school district in the Columbus area. Granville hosts as vibrant downtown and is a regional destination.

Description:   

The community seeks a professional, resourceful Police Chief with a commitment to providing the highest quality public safety services. The Village is a stable Council/Manager charter community. Two police chiefs have served the community since 1994. The departmental budget is $1.2 million. A strong staff of seven patrol officers and two sergeants (FOP union) are augmented by six part-time and six reserve officers, with 3 full-time dispatchers (AFSCME union). The Police Chief is supervised and appointed by the Village Manager with the concurrence of the Village Council.

Responsibilities include:  

The selected candidate must be an active communicator and community ombudsman to assist with the governance of the Village. Collaborative skills are necessary to work with Council, staff and residents.  The new Chief will align the staff to work toward measurable, continued accomplishments. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Compensation:  The salary range is $60,000 - $80,000, plus excellent benefits.

 

Minimum Requirements:  
  • Candidates must have demonstrated skills in five areas:  leadership, communication, management, customer service and community relations.
  • A bachelor's degree in public safety or related field is desired.
  • 7 - 10 years of increasingly responsible experience with local policing is desired.
  • Successful completion of an advanced law enforcement leadership program such as the FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, OACP's PELC and CLEE prgrams, the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety or a similar professional program is desired.
  • Experience with a college community will be advantageous.
  • Possession of a current Ohio Peace Officer Training Certificate is highly preferred.  A successful candidate, who does not possess the certification, must do so within one year.
  • Successful completion of a background check is required.

Position: Granville Ambassador (at the Granville Welcome Center)

Description:  

Granville Ambassadors are friendly, knowledgeable, and energetic representatives of the Granville community who work at the Granville Welcome Center.  The purpose of an Ambassador is to extend a warm greeting to visitors, to answer questions and provide information in a friendly and helpful manner, and to assist the visitors in planning for their time in Granville

Responsibilities of a Granville Ambassador include:

  • Greeting all visitors with a friendly smile
  • Assisting visitors by answering questions and handling requests for information
  • Learning and reading about the lcoal community including hisotry, local lore, and areas of interest
  • Attending local events and visiting area attractions to become familiar with Granville
Compensation:

This is a volunteer, unpaid position.  Granville Ambassadors are asked to volunteer at least two hours per month in the Granville Welcome Center.

Minimum Requirements:

Qualifications for this position include:

  • A basic knowledge of the local Granville community
  • A willingness to acquire the local knowledge to do the job well
  • The ability to work cooperatively with others
  • The ability to provide simple directions from a map or to draw a map
  • The ability to orally communicate information and directions clearly and simply
  • The ability to listen and understand questions, problems, and situations
  • The ability to maintain a positive attitude and enthusiastic demeanor
  • The willingness to commit to a minimum of 24-hours of volunteer time annually
  • A willinigness to commit to an average shift of two to four hours monthly
  • The minimum age requirement for volunteers is 16 years of age
